Stained cedar gable carport with a shingle roof and cedar gable end beside a garage, built by Sierra Outdoor
Outdoor living · Dallas–Fort Worth

Carports, built to match the house.

Attached and freestanding carports, framed in timber and roofed to match the house — shade and hail protection that doesn't look like a kit.

Texas sun fades paint and bakes interiors, and one hailstorm can cost more than the carport. A carport keeps the cars covered without the cost of a garage.

The difference between a carport that adds to the house and one that looks like a kit is the same thing that makes a good patio cover: the right posts, the right roofline and finishes that match the home.

What we build

Attached carports

Tied into the house or garage roofline, so the carport reads as part of the home.

Freestanding carports

Standing on their own posts along the drive or beside the garage, sized for the cars you have.

Timber carports

Stained cedar and timber posts and beams, built the same way as Sierra's patio covers.

Roofed to match

Roofing and trim chosen to match the house, so the carport doesn't look like an afterthought from the street.

Planning a carport

Size and clearance. Width, depth and height get worked out against your cars, truck or trailer, and how you pull in and open the doors.

Where it meets the house. An attached carport has to tie into the roof without creating a leak. That connection is where most problems start.

Wind and footings. A carport is a roof on posts, and DFW storms push hard on it. Post size and footings are what keep it standing.

City and HOA rules. Setbacks, permits and HOA approval vary by city and neighborhood, especially for carports facing the street.

Questions

Good to know.

Do I need a permit for a carport in Dallas–Fort Worth?

Usually, yes. Most DFW cities require a permit, and carports near the street often have setback rules. Some HOAs also need to approve the design. We'll tell you what applies to your address and handle the permit as part of the job.

Attached or freestanding?

Attached carports share the house's roofline and usually look the most built-in. Freestanding carports can go anywhere along the drive and don't touch the existing roof.

Can a carport match my house?

Yes. That's the point of building it custom: the posts, beams, roofing and trim are chosen to match the home instead of coming from a kit.
